Repairs & Maintenance to Chatham Islands Huts

The Chatham Islands are located about 800 kilometres to the east of the South Island and have a resident population of about 600 people. The Kiwi saying "Four seasons in one day" rings true for the Chatham Islands so being prepared for all types of weather was vital. Prior to even starting work Metro arranged material and vehicle freight as well as flights and accommodation for the guys on the ground.

Six Sites spread across the two Islands were worked on including Henga, Manukau, Maunganui, Pitt, Port Hut & Pukekio Hill.

Huts were washed down thoroughly and prepared for painting by treating rust, sealing panel joints and applying new sealing bandages to roof panels. Rusted flashings, Steel lifting eyes and corners were replaced where needed as well as a replacement entry door for Port Hut. Huts were painted with three coats of Noxyde to walls and roof and a final coat of Eagle Double Coat (aka Flamenco) to the roof. Fences were reinstated and grounds tidied.
